Circularity for us means designing with intention from concept to production. It means making products that not only last but have an end of life plan. We encourage you to return your HILOS because every part of your shoes is made to be disassembled and reused. In exchange, we offer a sweet discount for your next pair.
When you send us your shoes back, we disassemble them and send the materials off to a network of partners who can recycle and reuse the leather and TPU for new products.
We started HILOS to chart a new path, because we don’t need 2000 gallons of water to make a pair of shoes, nor do they need to be made overseas and shipped to warehouses just to sit in inventory.
Fashion retail is the fourth more polluting industry in the world, accounting for a quarter of the worlds chemical use and 20% of all water pollution. With one out of five pairs of shoes made going straight to the landfill, enough is enough.
To us, being a sustainable brand means thinking circular, making longer lasting products that are engineered for disassembly and designed for reusability. Our shoes use less than 15% of the water that traditional footwear takes to produce - that's saving 1,700 gallons of water per pair. Circularity means thinking of the complete life cycle starting at the concept stage. It’s not an after-thought or a badge of honor, it’s a lifestyle.
With responsibility comes honesty, and we’re not perfect. We still have a ways to go on our journey to circularity. A second life is good, but complete biodegradability is better. And so are regenerative farming approaches that allow tanneries to become carbon positive.
This is just the beginning for us. It’s not enough to be carbon neutral. We believe in building a future of personal, made-to-demand, regenerative products, and that starts with your shoes.
